Excerpt

ā€œUh, hey, Ivy.ā€

Her gaze traveled up long legs, past a trim waist to a familiar, broad chest, all protected by turnout gear.

ā€œGoing in or out?ā€ Cade quipped with a smirk.

ā€œVery funny.ā€ Ivy blew a wisp of hair out of her eyes. ā€œHow about taking care of the conflagration about to erupt on my stove? Thatā€™s your job, right?ā€

ā€œOā€™Brienā€™s on it.ā€ He kneeled down so they were more at eye level. ā€œDo you think Iā€™d be here calmly making small talk if you were still in danger?ā€

ā€œI was not in danger.ā€ Much.

ā€œAre you kidding?ā€ His eyes flashed. ā€œYouā€™re damn lucky it wasnā€™t worseā€”which it would have been if it wasnā€™t for the state-of-the art security system Nick had installed. As it is, youā€™ll have to ventilate the kitchen for a few days to get rid of the smell. And you owe your sister and her husband a new saucepan. But thatā€™s the extent of it.ā€

He tilted his head to study the half of her that had made it into the house. ā€œWell, that and the fact that youā€™re stuck in the doggy door.ā€

She consoled herself with the thought that he was inside, not on the porch talking to her ass.

ā€œYeah, about thatā€¦ā€ She held her hands out. ā€œCould you, maybe, pull me out of here or something?ā€

He sat on his very fine butt, bracing his feet against the door on either side of her, and grabbed her forearms. As embarrassed as she was, she couldnā€™t stop the hum of pleasure that buzzed through her at his touch.

ā€œReady?ā€ he asked, his gaze boring into hers. ā€œOn three.ā€

She swallowed hard and nodded.

ā€œOneā€¦twoā€¦three.ā€

He pulled. She stayed.

ā€œHmm.ā€ He released her and wiped his hands on his bunker pants. ā€œYouā€™re really wedged in there.ā€

She rolled her eyes. ā€œTell me something I donā€™t know, Captain Obvious.ā€

Another firefighter, who Ivy recognized from the softball game as the company captain, appeared behind Cade, followed by two more.

A bigger audience. Fan-freaking-tastic.

ā€œThe rest of the house is all clear,ā€ Cappy announced.

ā€œNeed some help rescuing your girlfriend?ā€ one of the others asked. ā€œOr are you with the blonde this week? I canā€™t keep your women straight.ā€

ā€œZip it, Oā€™Brien,ā€ Cappy barked. ā€œAnd get in line.ā€

In a matter of seconds, theyā€™d formed a human chain with Cade at the front and the guy Cappy called Oā€™Brien as the anchor.

ā€œHold on tight,ā€ Cade said, gripping her arms again. ā€œLike last time. On three.ā€

ā€œShouldnā€™t we have someone push fromā€”pardon the punā€”behind?ā€ Oā€™Brienā€™s voice reeked of snark.

ā€œI hate to admit it, but thatā€™s not a bad idea.ā€ Cappy pulled his radio out of his belt and pressed the button. ā€œSykes. Send a team around back. Weā€™ve got a female trapped in the pet door and need some pushing power.ā€

Pushing power? What was she? Fudgie the Whale?

Oh, wait, sheā€™d almost forgotten. In this town, sheā€™d always be Jabba the Mutt, no matter how long sheā€™d been gone or how much weight sheā€™d lost. Precisely why sheā€™d stayed away for almost thirteen years. And why she was leaving the minute her father was back in top form.

ā€œReady out here, Cap,ā€ a voice crackled over the radio.

ā€œOkay, like Cade said, on three.ā€ Cappy returned to his place in line. ā€œOneā€¦ā€

She felt a pair of hands on her ass. Could this possibly get any more humiliating?

ā€œTwoā€¦ā€

She let out a squeak as the hands shifted, hopefully to find a better pushing position and not to cop a cheap feel.

ā€œEnjoying yourself?ā€ Cade quirked a brow.

Oh, yeah. It could get more humiliating.

ā€œHardly.ā€ She closed her eyes to escape his teasing smile.

ā€œThree.ā€

Grunts and groans, mixed with an occasional expletive, filled the room. She felt like a chew toy caught between two rottweilers as the firefighters tugged and shoved.

ā€œThatā€™s it.ā€

ā€œSheā€™s coming free.ā€

ā€œAlmost there.ā€

ā€œOne more and sheā€™s out.ā€

With a pop, Ivy sprang loose, landing like a wet rag in Cadeā€™s lap. She forced her eyes open to see him looking down at her with a shit-eating grin.

ā€œNice catch,ā€ she uttered, scrambling off him.

Author Bio

Regina Kyle knew she was destined to be an author when she won a writing contest at age ten with a touching tale about a squirrel and a nut pie. By day, she writes dry legal briefs, representing the state in criminal appeals. At night, she writes steamy romance with heart and humor.

A lover of all things theatrical, Regina lives on the Connecticut coast with her husband, teenaged daughter and two melodramatic cats. When sheā€™s not writing, sheā€™s most likely singing, reading, cooking or watching bad reality television. Sheā€™s a member of Romance Writers of America and her local RWA chapter. Triple Dare is her third novel.
