Illusions ā we all create them.
For some itās to project an impressive image to a prospective employer; for others itās to attract the eye of another.
My illusion is a bit more...complicated.
Years in the making, my secret has the potential to bite me in the ass. And not in the way I typically enjoy.
Sex.
As women, weāre judged for reveling in the same carnal pleasures that men do, but Iāve never been shy about my voracious appetite.
Now, Iām under no illusions that Iāll find love with any of my one night stands.
After all, I have one rule ā no repeats ā but itās a rule thatās becoming harder to follow since Evan James came back into my life.
Did I say back into my life?
My name is Reagan Spencer, and you may think you know me, but...
How well do we really know anyone?
āWalk with me?ā Evan asked.
She gave him a small smile and nodded. āSure.ā
Pushing off the rail, she fell in step with him as they walked along the riverās
edge.
āIād be scared of what youād see if you looked at me through your lens,ā he
admitted.
āYou shouldnāt.ā
Evan scoffed and ran his fingers through his hair. āI canāt imagine thereās much
good thereā¦ā
āYouād be surprised at what I see.ā
That comment had him coming to a standstill. āWould I?ā
āYes.ā
āOkay,ā he said, and started walking again. āTell me what you see.ā
Reagan slid her thumbs down the straps of her camera and cocked her head,
looking him over.
āI see a successful man. One who dresses well, even on a Saturday morning. So
that would indicate to me that he takes pride in his appearance. Maybe cares about what
others think also. The fact that you were leaving a therapistās office makes me think
youāre a man with some issues, but also a man who is willing to work through them.
Again, that comes back to pride. You seem to be able to swallow yours when need be.ā
Evanās brow furrowed, but he said nothing as she continued.
āYou also have a certainā¦air about you. Itās in the way you move. Youāre
confident, but at the same time, when you flash that smile, the arrogance disappears, and
you look like the boy you used to be.ā
The smile under discussion appeared, and Evan asked, āHow do you know what
kind of boy I used to be?ā
āHey? This is my story,ā Reagan reminded him before he continued asking
questions she wasnāt willing to answer.
āOh, my apologies, I somehow thought it involved me.ā
āIt does, but youāre on the outside listening, so shh. You asked, remember?ā
With a serious face, he nodded. āYou would be right.ā
āOkay. Now I lost my train of thought.ā
Evan chuckled. āWell, itās probably for the best that you didnāt mention any of
my unappealing attributes.ā
āSpeaking ofā¦ā she said, and turned to walk backward, facing him. āHow did the therapy session go today?ā
āReally great. There was an orgy, a sampling of sex toys, and a dessert buffet
afterward. Very satisfying.ā
āEvanā¦ā
He blew out a breath and rubbed the back of his neck. āIt was fine. Itās always
fine. Today, Dr. Glover brought up behavior triggers, and it helped to figure out where
this whole mess started.ā
Curious, she asked, āAnd where was that?ā
āIt wasnāt any one event. It was the high off the power I got from my job, it was
being in an unhealthy relationshipā¦my grandparents passingā¦the worry about
following in my parentsā footsteps. The further things spiraled out of my control, the
more I craved that control in other parts of my life. Well, a very specific part of my life.ā
He glanced over at her before continuing. āObviously thatās the condensed version, butā¦I think it helps. Knowing those things and hopefully being able to stop them in the future.ā
But the urge isnāt gone?ā
The look in his eyes was haunted as he replied, āNo. No, it isnāt gone.ā
She dashed over, out of the rain, and lowered the umbrella as she came to a stop in front of him. His eyes automatically zoomed in on her plumped-up breasts, and the first thought that ran through her mind was, Score one for me. Slightly juvenile, perhaps, but a much more appropriate thought than the ones sheād been having prior to getting out of the cab.
āI wasnāt sure youād brave the weather tonight. Thought I might end up going stag.ā
Shaking the umbrella, Reagan brought her eyes up to his and let her mouth curl into a wicked smile.
āPlease, Iām at my best when wet.ā
Evanās eyes heated as he seemed to bite his tongue. āAlready pulling out the big guns, I see.ā
āOh no, honey, I havenāt even started. Iām saving my true arsenal for the men who count.ā
Evan cocked his head to the side, but didnāt appear offended as a small smile tugged his lips. āI see how it is.ā
āDo you?ā
āYes. Youāre gonna go all sex kitten, and Iām going to be stuck asking about feelings and shit.ā
As they moved toward the door, and Evan reached for the handle and pulled it open, Reagan stopped and looked up at him.
āYou do have feelings, donāt you, Evan?ā
He leaned down until his mouth was by her ear and whispered, āIām having a very strong feeling right now.ā
Reaganās stomach flipped, and she ignored the urge to flirt back with the man grinning at her, instead scoffing before patting his arm. āWell, you should make sure to tell that to the first young lady you sit down with.ā
āIf sheās a lady, Iām thinking she wonāt appreciate that particular feeling.ā
āThen what does that make me?ā
Brushing past him, she felt his hand against her hip through the tight material of her dress. She didnāt have to have eyes in the back of her head to know he was staring at her ass.
āThat makes you fucking dangerous.ā
You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her āquiet time.ā Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.
Her first solo novel, a romantic comedy, is due out in early 2015, but first, she thought sheād write a raunchy story with her best friend that would scar her conservative southern family for life.
If youād like to get in touch with her, sheās easy to find - just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone thatās dominated her cell phone for ten years.
