EXCERPT:

She had to be cold, wearing only a black leather jacket over her clothes, but she didnā€™t show it. I shrugged out of my coat and stepped close, draping it over her shoulders, even though Iā€™d be freezing in a few minutes in only my suit. Her eyes fluttered open, and she gave me a faint smile. ā€œThanks.ā€
I nodded, my throat tightening at the sight of that smile. She wore the sexy, bright red lipstick I remembered from before, and I had the strongest urge to kiss it right off her. God, this girl was dangerous. Iā€™d spent the last few months completely dead inside, yet somehow sheā€™d jolted me back to life in a matter of minutes. Problem was, I wasnā€™t sure I was ready to be resurrected yet.
She pulled the jacket tighter around herself and took a deep breath. ā€œWhat about you? Any big plans for Christmas?ā€
ā€œNo plans.ā€ I looked away so she couldnā€™t see what it cost me to admit that. ā€œI just started at this job a few months ago and Iā€™m trying to make a good impression, so I didnā€™t want to ask for any vacation time to visit my parents back in Michigan.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s rough. What about friends here? A nice guy like you must have made some by now.ā€
ā€œNopeā€¦itā€™s just me this year.ā€ Friends? Ha. I shrugged it off, rubbing my hands together for warmth. ā€œItā€™s all right. I have a lot of work to do, and the office will be nice and quiet. Iā€™ll even get paid time-and-a-half if I come in on Christmas Day.ā€ The excuse sounded pathetic even to my ears.
ā€œNo shit?ā€ She let out a short, harsh laugh. ā€œThat is the saddest thing Iā€™ve ever heard. You canā€™t be alone at Christmas!ā€
ā€œItā€™s not that big a deal, reallyā€¦ā€
She suddenly straightened up, her eyes widening. ā€œI have the perfect idea.ā€
ā€œYou do?ā€
ā€œItā€™s the best solution to both our problems. You come with me to my familyā€™s holiday dinner tonight and pretend to be my boyfriend. Youā€™re definitely the kind of guy who will impress my parents, and that way you wonā€™t have to spend Christmas Eve alone.ā€
ā€œPretend to be your boyfriend?ā€ A wave of panic swept over me at the thought. I wasnā€™t ready to be anyoneā€™s boyfriendā€”fake or otherwise. ā€œIā€™m not sure thatā€™s such a great idea. Couldnā€™t you just tell your parents what happened?ā€
ā€œUgh, of course you would say that. Fine, forget it. It was a stupid idea anyway.ā€ She pushed off the car and unlocked the door with her key.
ā€œHang on,ā€ I said, taking her arm and turning her back to face me. If she got in that car, Iā€™d probably never see her again, and I couldnā€™t let her go just yet. Not until I fixed things between us somehow. ā€œWhat kind of food are we talking here?ā€
A slight grin touched her lips. ā€œMy mom always makes enough food to feed the entire neighborhood. Turkey and ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams with marshmallows, green bean casserole, five kinds of piesā€¦ I could keep going, but you probably get the idea.ā€
ā€œHmm, that is very tempting. But are you sure theyā€™d be okay with me showing up unexpectedly?ā€
ā€œThey expect me to bring the perfect boyfriend Iā€™ve been telling them about for weeks. Youā€™ll fit the bill.ā€ She tilted her head and considered. ā€œThat reminds me, youā€™ll have to go by the name Brett, too.ā€
ā€œBrett?ā€ She was kidding, right? One look at her face told me she wasnā€™t. I had zero desire to pretend to be some other guy on Christmas Eve, but after getting her fired, how could I possibly say no? I owed her this favor at the very least. ā€œAnything else I should know?ā€
ā€œNah, I never told them that much. Just that I was dating a nice, handsome guy.ā€
I arched an eyebrow. ā€œHmm, not sure I fit that description.ā€
ā€œYou know you do, pretty boy.ā€ She met my gaze head-on. ā€œLook, after tonight you donā€™t have to see me again. Once the holidays are over, Iā€™ll tell them we broke up, and we can pretend it never happened. So are you in or out?ā€
The smart thing to do was to say goodnight and high-tail it back to my car. I wasnā€™t ready to get involved with any girl, let alone one who turned my insides out with a single look or the slightest touch. But there was something about her that I couldnā€™t walk away from, not this time.
ā€œAll right, Iā€™ll pretend to be your boyfriend tonightā€¦but only if you agree to go on a real date with me later.ā€
